When your members are at the beach do you have a plan to see giving stay healthy?
So you think you know why churches see giving in the summer decline? The most obvious answer is that attendance is down. That is of course the major reason. However if we know that attendance will decline as people go on vacations, why is it that we don’t work to head off the resulting decline in giving? Think about it. Every summer, almost every church sees giving decline. It happens year in and year out. It regularly occurs. If we know it is going to happen why is it we don’t do something?
Let me share with you four reasons why churches fail to act about the decline in summer giving. See if you are guilty of any of these four.
1. Most churches are reactionary thinkers and planners not proactive. I find that the tyranny of the urgent keeps many churches from doing any kind of advance planning. As a result they simple react to whatever crisis is upon them rather than work to proactively avoid crisis. What results is that any action taken by a church to reverse their giving typically is too late to make a difference.
2. Most churches lack a stewardship plan. Churches often have plans for everything but stewardship. Isn’t it interesting that we overlook the importance of funding those mission and ministry initiatives?
3. Most pastors hate anything and everything to do with stewardship. The pastor leads the church and if he is not interested in stewardship planning the church will not see the need.
4. Most churches simply don’t know what to do or think it is too hard. It just all seems too hard and complicated. Many churches simply hope that things will be better this year or next week. As I once read, hope is not a strategy!
